Geek Therapy:  A different perspective into the psyche

Utah has been rated as the US’s geekiest state.  Not really all that surprising when you look at the rapidly growing convention scene, the plethora of game stores throughout northern Utah, and the increasing number of gaming companies opening development offices in our state.   One of the best parts about geek culture is it is based purely on the idea of truly enjoying what makes you happy.   This has made the geek community into a supportive and open minded group.   And it has made the therapy world take notice.

Whether it is through the joy of learning something new, empathizing with a character from your fandom, or escaping into a game when you need a break, there is nothing quite like being able to just let go and geek out.   Geek therapy is all about pulling these established positive resources into the treatment process.   With geek culture being so vast and varied, there is a bit of something for everyone.

Maybe you are struggling with social anxiety?   That doesn’t mean you don’t want to be around people, it’s just hard to do.   Coming together with people who have shared interests can be a huge help.   Plenty of people who have crippling shyness or extreme introversion can’t handle crowds well, but can happily go to a convention without a hitch.   It’s all about being within your comfort zone, and sometimes the excitement of being around so many equally as excited people can hold off the anxiety for long enough to enjoy it.

Or, maybe, expressing your emotions about a situation is difficult.   Most people struggle with communication in one aspect or another.   Writing (including fanfic), playing RPGs like Dungeons and Dragons, and LARPing are great ways to get that out.

And we can’t forget the importance of self-care.   Doing something you truly enjoy is self-care.   Carving out a dedicated time to do something you really love is very important for a person’s mental health and shouldn’t be skimped on.

Therapy is not a one size fits all kind of thing.   Treatments vary depending on condition, severity, outside influencing factors, and of course the personality of the person in therapy.   Speaking a common language can be vital to successful therapy treatments.   That is why so many therapists are learning to speak geek!

With Utah being so geek friendly, we have decided to work on providing insight on how geeking out can be helpful to your mental health.   Coming up will be articles on new geek related therapy approaches and techniques, analyses of psychology references in pop culture, and reviews of helpful mental health related games, apps, and more.
